Since 2000, UM BWMC has been a member of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). UMMS is a multi-hospital system with academic, community and specialty service missions reaching every part of the state and beyond. This partnership allows the system hospitals to work seamlessly together – collaborating and sharing critical information.
Currently, when a patient at UM BWMC has the need for open heart surgery, patients are transferred directly from our facility to our affiliate hospital the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. UMMC performs more heart surgeries than any other health care institution in the state. Learn more about heart surgery at UMMC.
Many of UM BWMC’s cardiologists are also faculty members at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, teaching the next generation of doctors. Our physicians work in partnership with the School of Medicine to participate in clinical, research and educational opportunities.
Established in 1807, The School of Medicine is the first public and the fifth oldest medical school in the United States, and the first to institute a residency training program. The School of Medicine serves as the anchor for a large academic health center which aims to provide the best medical education, conduct the most innovative biomedical research and provide the best patient care and community service to Maryland and beyond.
