The Edwards Family - Michelle and Tom
"My husband and I delivered our first baby, Megan, at UM BWMC. I’m writing this letter to express our thanks for a wonderful birthing experience at the Pascal Women's Center at UM BWMC. Before our delivery, we participated in UM BWMC's childbirth classes. We were very impressed with the knowledge and demeanor of the nurses who taught the courses. All of the nurses seemed extremely friendly and willing to answer any questions openly and honestly. The classes were very comfortable and informative. As first-time parents, we were very glad that we took the classes and felt we learned a lot from them.
I was induced and had a long labor, over 24 hours, which ended in a C-section. We stayed at the hospital for five nights. The labor was long and difficult, but the labor and delivery staff were extremely supportive and encouraging the whole time. I was impressed with how attentive and friendly the nurses were. I had two midwives attend to me during my labor – Paula Greer and Marie Herrick. Both of these ladies were outstanding coaches and I don’t know that I would have done without them. I really wanted a natural childbirth and tried for one, even with a Pitocin induction. I expressed to Paula that I was hoping to have a midwife with me if I did not take pain meds, and she insisted on staying through the night with me, even though her shift ended at 7:00 p.m. In doing this, she worked a double shift and then went to the office in the morning, without a break. Paula helped me relax by using the birthing ball and by sitting in the whirlpool tub for a while. The tub was amazing at helping me relax. However, I wasn’t able to maintain my own contractions and had to increase the Pitocin. I did end up asking for an epidural around 3:00 a.m., and even then Paula was still extremely supportive. When shifts changed, Marie relieved Paula and helped me push for 3 hours. With no progress, Dr. Devi Chakravorty decided it was time for a C-section. She did a great job with the surgery and Marie assisted her during the procedure. Having to get a C-section was scary for me, but the operation went very smoothly.
We spent four nights in Post-Partum Recovery. Again, I was impressed with how attentive, friendly and helpful the staff was. The nurses responded quickly to our every request and continually made sure we were comfortable. During each visit, the nurses inquired about my pain level and offered pain relief options. I can’t think of any nurse that was not helpful. I was provided plenty of food - three meals each day, and even a complimentary breakfast for my husband. Our room was kept clean and tidy by the housekeeping staff. Each morning, a pediatrician came to check on the baby, who made me feel reassured that she was healthy. In addition, the baby nurse checked on her every few hours throughout the day. I told my friends and family who came to visit that I felt like I was at a “resort” – everything was taken care of for me.
The staff was very willing to help establish breastfeeding. Many of the nurses offered their own tips, and it was nice that so many were mothers who had breastfed their own children. I was able to hear many different perspectives and was able to take away something from each of them. The lactation consultant was extremely helpful in showing me a comfortable position and getting a successful latch. I think new moms need a boost of confidence that breastfeeding is going well and she was able to provide that professional reassurance for me.
When I first got pregnant, I was a bit hesitant about delivering at UM BWMC. The reason for this was that since the Maternity Unit is so new, I didn’t know anyone who had delivered their baby at UM BWMC. I felt a bit uncomfortable without having a personal recommendation, and considered switching. After we started taking the childbirth classes, I began to feel more comfortable with UM BWMC and decided to stick with it. I really liked how it felt smaller and more personal than a larger hospital. I’m so glad we decided to stick with UM BWMC, as I can’t imagine having a better experience or more friendly staff. I will certainly spread the word to my friends and encourage them to deliver at UM BWMC.
In closing, thank you for a wonderful birthing experience. All of my needs were met beyond my expectations. I couldn’t be happier with the staff at UM BWMC. When we were discharged, I was a bit sad to leave such a positive and supportive environment. Our baby is doing great! We will certainly come back to UM BWMC for delivery of our future children."
